Terrence Mc'Nally's
Frankie and Johnny at the Clair de Lune

"Frankie & Johnny" is a simple yet romantic story about two people trying to find love. Johnny is a short order cook in a New York diner. Frankie is a waitress who has given up on love. The story of "Frankie & Johnny" takes place following the couple's first date…one that ends up in a night of passion at Frankie's apartment. Having fallen in love with her, Johnny woos Frankie with his candid words of lust and love as he attempts to help her let go of the fear of being hurt and to trust in love again. Playwright Terrence McNally wrote the part of "Frankie" for actress Kathy Bates, who originated the role for the play's New York premiere at The Manhattan Theater Club in 1987. In 1991, Michelle Pfeiffer revived the role of "Frankie" opposite Al Pacino's "Johnny" in the feature film adaptation produced and directed by Garry Marshall.
